陈独秀为何抨击"桐城派",这有几个方面的原因:一是承接了晚清民初对"桐城派"批评与超越的潮流,看到了"桐城派"从中兴走向衰落的趋势;二是欲提倡新文化、新思想、新文学,必破"桐城派"正统、正道、正宗之地位,三是以林纾为代表的"古文"势力成为了现实阻力,对林纾和桐城派的批判就成为《新青年》重要的目标和任务。

The reasons for CHEN Du-xiu＇s attack on the Tongcheng School are analyzed in the paper.Firstly,he inherited the trend of criticizing and transcending the Tongcheng School,and saw the school＇s tendency from prosperity to decline;secondly,advocating new culture,new ideas and new literature,he was sure to remove the school＇s orthodox,official and authentic status;and thirdly,since the forces in the classical style of Chinese prose represented by LIN Shu became real resistance to the trend,LIN Shu and the Tongcheng School were the important objects to criticize by The New Youth and the criticism was one of the magazine＇s key tasks.
