《喧哗与骚动》是美国作家福克纳最重要的作品之一,标志着其进入艺术创作的辉煌时期。全书虽然没有从南方淑女人物的视角进行叙述,但是女性角色却是统领全书的灵魂人物。其中,作为母亲的康普生夫人固守着南方淑女的神话,因为家族荣誉的丧失,终日郁郁寡欢,甚至逃避了做母亲应尽的责任,本质上已经与南方淑女的传统背道而驰。作为年轻一代的南方淑女,凯蒂虽然出身在传统的贵族家族,然而她从童真走向堕落,随波逐流,成为反传统的牺牲品。两位南方淑女的命运是南方淑女文化嬗变的缩影,也显示出南方淑女文化的悖论。

The Sound and The Fury is one of the most important novels of American writer William Faulkner,marking the beginning of the illustrious time of his writing art.Although there is no narrative perspective from any Southern lady characters,female characters are the souls of this book.Among all female characters,as a mother,Mrs.Compson adheres to the myth of Southern lady,and because of the loss of family honor,she is depressed and gloomy all day,and even escapes the duty of mother.She runs in the opposite direction of Southern lady tradition.As a young Southern lady,though born in a noble family,Caddy walks from virginity fall,drifts with the tide and becomes the victim of rebelling tradition.The two Southern ladies＇ life stories form the epitome of the evolvement of Southern lady culture and meanwhile show the antinomy of Southern lady culture.
