金庸认为,武侠小说源远流长,又以中国古代社会为背景,因此武侠小说是中国传统的小说形式,与古代章回小说类似,有分回标目、引入诗词、古典白话、说书口吻等特点。他反对将武侠小说写得洋化、现代化,主张回归传统。与传统的形式相应,武侠小说的内容主要是中国传统道德观念,尤其是传统的侠义思想。
