Translation is not only a language-based activity but also a process of bilingual thinking, which entails the use of both the source language and the target language as the intermediary for judgment and inference.Only through this bilingual thinking process can what is meant in the source language be perceived, accepted and processed until in the end it is expressed and conveyed in the target language.By referring to some actual examples of English-Chinese translation, this paper makes an initial study into the thinking process of a translator and maintains that whether or not a translator has a strong awareness of bilingual thinking directly determines the quality of the translation. Therefore, while doing translation,a translator should consciously alternate thinking in the source language and thinking in the target language in order to achieve more accurate understanding of the source text and more exact expression of the target text.
