This paper more completely summarizes more than sixty methods of image contrast enhancement proposed and developed in succession in the last twenty years in accordance with a large number of the relevant literatures, and consequently these methods are classified into eight categories. The basic ideas of the various methods as well as their advantages and defects are critically reviewed. Some corresponding formulae of computation and several pictures are also given. This paper will be valuable to both further inquiring into the methods of image contrast enhancement theoretically and selecting an appropriate method of image contrast enhancement in practical applications.
