Objective To investigate the effect of the damage and functional change of vascular endothelial cells (VEC) on diabetic microangiopathy. Methods The number of circulating endothelial cells(CEC) and level of endothelin(ET) were measured in 30 normal subjects and 60 cases with diabetic mellitus (DM). Results The CEC number and ET level in diabetic patients were significantly higher than those in normal subjects; the CEC number and ET level in diabetic patients with microangiopathy were significantly higher than in those without microangiopathy. There was significant positive correlation between CEC number, ET level and HbA 1C level. Conclusion VEC damage and elevated plasma ET level may participate in the pathogenesis of diabetic microangiopathy synergistically.
