Bathsheba is a well--known female character in The Old Testament ？ Samuel. Looking at the women images in a series of Thomas Hardy＇s novels, except Bathsheba who bears the same name in Far from the Madding Crowd, Eustacia in The Return of the Native and Elfride in A Pair of Blue Eyes, all these characters have the prototype of Bathsheba. Their experience and character share many similiarities with Bathsheba. Through analysis and eomparision of their stories, we can see Hardy＇s skillful use of Biblical archetypes in superb style and deep christian sentiments as well as his Christian sentiments.
