Methylstyrene is reacted with phenol, in the presence of paratoluene sulfonic acid as a catalyst, to prepare paracumyl phenol. The effects of the reaction conditions, such as the molar ratio of phenol to methylstyrene, feeding rate of the methylstyrene, reaction temperature, and reaction time, are examined. Steamdistillation and recrystallization are combined to achieve the optimum purification of the reaction product.
