The natural convection heat transfer of water-based ferrofluids in a horizontal thin layerunder non-uniform vertical magnetic field was investigated in this paper. The results showed that whenthe non-uniform vertical magnetic field was applied in the same direction as that of the gravitationalforces, heat transfer enhancement was obtained, whereas, deterioration occurred in the oppositedirection. The heat transfer process could be controlled by the application of an external non-uniformvertical magnetic field. The natural convective heat transfer correlations of the ferrofluids in ahorizontal thin layer in a non-uniform vertical magnetic field were obtained from the experimental data.
