唐宋以来,江南地区已逐渐成为传统中国社会经济最为发展的地区之一。江南地区社会经济发展的一个重要表现就是对外经济交往,这种经济交往很大程度上依赖和得益于"口岸"的存在和发展。在唐宋元明清长达千年的历史时期中,江南地区口岸经历了一个持续变迁的过程,影响这一变迁最基本的原因当推自然环境,主要是包括河、江、海综合作用下水道变化的结果。但不论如何变迁,江南地区之口岸皆具国内贸易与海外贸易双重功能,皆具相当的规模及腹地辐射能力。在江南口岸的变迁过程中,政府以及市场具有同样重要的推动和促进作用。

Jiangnan had always been the most important distract of social and economic development in China since Tang and Song Dynasty.The development in Jiangnan had depended on the international and national economic association which had relied on the port in Jiangnan.The port in Jiangnan had been a long changes From the Tang and Song dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties in which the changes of natural environment,especial of the rivers,had played an important role.There was double function of the national and international trade in the port in Jiangnan.The government and market had always played an important role in the changes of ports in Jiangnan.
