ARM正在全球"组团",中国的山寨厂商也许是其继续扩大规模优势最重要一支奇兵。
'Most people take Shanzhaism(Chinese style of innovation by imitation) as a bad thing as it breaks the existed value chain and drags down prices, but I think the Shanzhai model can quickly cut down costs of mature products and increase sales,' said Tudor Brown,President of ARM Ltd.,a leading semiconductor intellectual property(IP) supplier for digital electronic products.ARM was established in 1990 by 12 engineers in UK,including Brown. Its business model involves the designing and licensing of IP rather than the manufacturing and selling of actual semiconductor chips. In the mobile Internet area,ARM's chips have reached four billion shipments in 2009,and on the smart phone market, over 90% of handsets use ARM chips, including mainstream brands.Meanwhile, players on the Shanzhai industrial chain in China are tired of price wars and eager to clutch at the straws-smart phones. It is estimated that there will be 875 million smart phones by 2014,in which 400 million sets are low-end handsets. This will be the basis of cooperation between ARM and native Shanzhai vendors,if the estimation is accurate.
