China National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC) recently entered into an agreement with the US-based Chesapeake Energy through which CNOOC will purchase a 33.3% stake in the Eagle Ford Shale project in Texas. The $1 billion investment from CNOOC is expected to bring the daily production of the project to up to 500 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day(kboe/d) in the next decade. The acquisition represents the latest move by Chinese oil majors in carrying out their 'Go Global' strategy.Overseas investment is one of China's most important energy strategies to satisfy the country's increasing petroleum demand.According to CNPC,expanding overseas petroleum production is expected to account for some 25% of China's domestic production in 2010,2.5% higher than a year earlier. To increase overseas production and take advantage of frontier technologies and experience,Chinese oil players can be expected to continue to push hard on this strategy of globalization in the coming years.
