This paper analyzes the cognition and thinking process of metaphorical English words in terms of cognitive psychology.It also brings to light the formation effect of these words.It illustrates that figurative meaning of words extends the original meaning of vocabulary and the extension is the result of deeply semantic association and reasoning based on its original meaning.Besides,with examples,it explains that metaphorical meaning of words is also the result of the mapping of two domains and analogy thinking is vital in this process.Metaphorical use of words enhances vividness and image of language.
