Man is the product of specific culture and various ideological discourses in which he lives. American imperialist discourse is carved into Jack London and shows itself in his journalistic reportage the ＂People of the Abyss＂. Assuming a nationalist position, Jack London applies the national myth of superiority to the study of the slum in the eastern area of the British London city. In this framework, the slum is represented as symbolic of the fall of the British Empire, predicting its replacement by the American hegemony. In its final analysis, the slum investigation expresses the American drive for and rationale of imperialist hegemony. It helps construct and disseminate the American imperialist discourse.
