The Effects of Nanxhao's Invasion into Annan on the National Security of the Tang Dynasty

耗时十余年的南诏入犯唐朝安南都护府的战争,不仅对唐代南疆社会造成极大破坏,同时也使已是强弩之末的唐帝国遭受沉重的创伤并由此导致国家安全的严重危机。战争折射出安南都护府在唐代边疆防御体系中所占有的重要地位与作用,它既是唐王朝用以经略西南边疆的军事基地,也是防范南诏内犯的边塞铁篱。南诏的兴起使安南都护府失去其西北屏藩,唐朝的南部、西南边疆也因此失去彼此制约的平衡。而南诏对安南的频频进犯,则直接击溃了自唐初以来帝国精心构建的边疆防御体系。安南失陷,敲响了唐亡的警钟。

From 853 A.D. to 866 A. D. , Nanzhao waged an invasion into Annan. The war had caused huge damage to the soumern borderland of the Tang Empire, inflicted heavy losses and sparked off a serious security crisis to the decaying dynasty. The invasion brought to light the important geographical position of Annan and its key function in the border defense system of the Tang dynasty, ei- ther a border fortress or an defense against Nanzhao＇ s possible encroachment. With the northwestern area of Annan under the threat of the rising Nanzhao, the southern and southeast borderlands of the Tang dynasty Could no longer maintain mutual defense. The frequent invasion from Nanzhao smashed the border fence which had been built in the early years of the Tang dynasty. The fall of Annan tolled the knell for the Tang Empire.
