和其他女性作家一样,玛利亚·埃奇沃思一直被遗忘在父权文化的历史长河中。她的作品在国内至今几乎无人论及。《贝琳达》是埃奇沃思的代表作之一,讲述了贝琳达·泊特曼在英国伦敦社交界寻找幸福婚姻的过程中如何实现建构自己理想的性别形象的故事。小说展示并审视了父权文化下四种不同类型的女性形象建构:"悍妇"、"激进女权主义者"、"家庭天使"以及"玩偶"。而通过对这四种女性形象建构的审视总结,埃奇沃思为贝琳达建构了不同的具有独立和理性的女性形象,并以此展示了自己对于女性形象建构的独特看法。
Like other women writers,Maria Edgeworth's works have been neglected in the history of patriarchal culture.Belinda,one of her masterpieces,narrates the image construction development which Belinda underwent in her pursuit of marital happiness in London society.This novel displays female image construction of four different types:shrew, radical feminist,angel and doll.Through summarizing the four types of female images,Edgeworth constructs Belinda as an independent and sensible female and accordingly highlights her own view upon the female gender image construction.
