元杂剧爱情剧中的男主人公几乎全是文人书生,他们饱读诗书,富有才学,不顾门户之见,大胆追求爱情,当爱情受到阻碍的时候能坚守爱情,并且功成名就以后并不移情别恋,这是他们积极的一面。他们也有消极的一面,那就是抗争不激烈,不彻底,对压迫势力妥协。他们的消极一定程度上反映了元代文人书生的生活状况及他们的人生追求。

The heroes in the Romance drama of the Yuan Dynasty were almost all literati, who were educated and learned after reading many kinds of poetry and books. They, regardless of the elass bias, boldly pursued their true love. When their love encountered hindrance, they still persisted in love, and never shifted one＇ s love to another even after they achieved success and won fame, which were their active elements. However, they also had their negative aspects, that is, their struggle, being not fierce and complete, easily surrendered before the oppressing forces. Their passiveness reflected to a certain extent their living situation and pursuit of ideal of the literati of the Yuan Dynasty.
