In Alice Munro's works self-realization and self-transcendence are often achieved through reexamining life's 'commonplace occurrences'.This article,by taking Alice Munro's short story 'Face' as an example,is an attempt to interpret how the unreliable narration, especially the type based on the axis of knowledge/perception,helps her reveal the character's hidden darkness. It goes further to explore the origin of the character's sense of incompleteness and exclusion: the reductive and repressive force of the omnipresent 'gaze' upon the self.It argues that Alice Munro shows her unique humanistic concerns by representing the hierarchical power struggles through the juxtaposition of space.
