在中国现代文学史上占据着一席之位的苏雪林,有其个人的特别之处。苏雪林深受五四新文化和新文学的熏陶和影响,但她的文学创作和文学批评却拥有鲜明的传统色彩。她是一位学者型的作家,有学者的冷静和理性,也有学院派的自恋和隔膜。苏雪林的学识来自传统的营养,也受到传统的约束,特别是师承了林纾的古文观念和胡适的道德人格。新文学的发生却以批判林纾古文及其守旧思想为目标,胡适也是反对派的主将之一,但苏雪林既喜爱林纾的古文,又崇拜胡适的道德人格,由此化解了他们之间的矛盾,实现了传统与现代的意义整合。

Su Xuelin ranks as one of the outstanding writers and a distinctive figure impossible to be ignored in the history of modern Chinese literature. Although deeply influenced by the May 4th New Cultural Movement and New Literature,her literature creation and criticism feature a striking conservative literary flavour and inclination. She is a scholar-writer,who lives a life,of both reason with equanimity,and senses of self-obsession,continual restraint in an absolute academic manner. The profound tradition enables the harvest of her wealth of learning,simultaneously,it also functions as a negative restraint. In this climate,Su Xuelin exhibits a symbiotic succession of Lin Shu＇s concepts of classical Chinese essays and Hu Shi＇s ideas on Moral Personality. It is a universal truth that the ultimate goal of criticizing and declaiming against Lin Shu＇s classical Chinese essays and relevant conservative thoughts triggers the flame of NewLiterature Movement; a member of pioneer-reformers,Hu Shi firmly declaims his sharp opposition in the course of conflicting revolution. As a genius writer,Su Xuelin strikes a balance between her fondness of Lin＇s concepts and worship of Hu＇s ideas. Therefore,her peculiarity and capability of handling the contradictions manifests a state of her mind and her practice：an accessible attainment of integrating traditional norms with modern initiatives in literature.
