Illustration and Analysis of the Public Signs and Their Incorrect Translation in Changshu City

公示语是城市的重要名片,在一定程度上反映出城市的建设风貌和人文素养。与上海、北京等国内一线大城市相比,许多中小城市对于公示语翻译问题的关注相对滞后。文章就江苏省常熟市的城市公示语翻译问题展开实地调研,从规范性、语言、语用以及文化等多维角度切入,结合实例对现存的许多英译失误现象进行了分析和归纳。

This article argues that more attention needs to be attached to the rectification of Chinese- English public signs in small and medium-sized cities. The author intends to probe into the main factors and underlying problems behind the mistranslation of public signs by exploring the miscellaneous errors in a rich array of samples in Changshu City through which the paper also presents several suggestions.
