Modern Chinese literature did not begin from 1917 as traditionally believed, nor from 1900 as held by the notion of 20^th century Chinese literature, but from 1894 when the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 began. Translation of Western literature since 1894 led to the modernization of Chinese literature. The paper divides modern Chinese literature since 1894 into five stages and analyzes their respective characteristics. The westernization of Chinese literature shows that the westernization coupled with Chinese tradition will make a writing more easily accepted and that it is unadvisable to imitate the writings of particular time and location in the West as the literature of the West in general,
