How Comparative Literature be Practiced:An Interview with Zhang Longxi

张隆溪认为比较文学不能挟理论以自重而忽视文学本身，只有回归文学的基本问题才可能重新确立比较文学的学科价值，中国的比较文学研究者完全不必把时间和精力花费在时髦理论的输入和“学派”的建立上，应该更多地专注于文学研究的基础工作并努力为整个人文学界撰写出优秀的著作，在此基础上还要积极主动地参与跨领域、跨语言和跨文化的对话与交流，只有如此才有可能获得外界的广泛承认和真正尊重。

Prof. Zhang Longxi pointed out that if we want to reassert the disciplinary research value of the comparative literature, we should not overemphasize abstract theories but attache less importance to the literature itself. For the comparative literature scholars in China there is no need to waste time and energy on the borrowing of novel theories and the establishment of ＂Chinese comparative literature schools＂. Instead, we should put more emphasis on the fundamental work of comparative literature studies and do manage to provide a lot of outstanding academic works for humanists. On this basis, we should try ac- tively to engage in the dialogues and exchanges among different disciplines, cultures and languages. Only in this way can we receive widespread recognition and genuine respect from outside.
