Continuum or Binary Opposition? —Rethinking the Prototypical Transitivity

本文试图论证:语义特征与动词及物性实际上是不相关的,由此揭示语义原型观的悖论性,并维护二元互斥的学理基础。二元互斥表现于动词,即动词的及物性和不及物性是泾渭分明的,决定动词根本属性的不是语义特征而是句法结构。论证显示:以原型范畴界定动词属性不能满足科学所要求的充分解释力,也不具有刚性特征。

This paper tries to demonstrate the irrelevance of semantics to transitivity, and to unveil the contradiction of the semantic prototype assumption and to uphold the tenets of binary opposition. The boundary between transitive and intransitive verbs is clear-cut, as is determined by the syntactical structure instead of semantic values. The discussion discloses that explanation of transitivity based on the prototypical category theory is inadequate, as it is short of the kind of rigidity required by scientific research.
