摘要 美国《新闻周刊》最近对小沈阳的报道"The Dirtiest Man in China",特别是这个题目本身,是一个非常有趣的文化缺省案例,反映了英汉语文化在媒体与隐私关系上的一个重要观念差异。而对于dirtiest这个词的理解与翻译障碍,属于多元文化向一元文化阐释与翻译过程中一个典型障碍。它向我们提示了一个也许值得进一步探究的翻译研究方向。 The recent controversial Newsweek report on Little Shenyang, entitled "The Dirtiest Man in China," especially the title itself is an interesting type of cultural default: It shows some major difference between the Chinese culture and the English cultures about the relationship between media and privacy. In addition, the sensational "dirtiest" has posed a stumbling block to Chinese readers' interpretation and translation effort of it. As a sex-related word, "dirty" is multivalent, while its recognized equivalents in Chinese are all derogatory: they are all monovalent. The translation between multivalent words in one language and their seeming equivalents which are monovalent is worthy of further exploration.
