New Journalism,or narrative non-fiction the two integral parts of Norman Mailer's faction writings, occupied a vital place in his writing career. This essay aims to probe into Mailer's idiosyncrasies in these two genres and the breakthroughs he achieved therein.Through analyses of his relevant representative works,we conclude that in his New Journalistic reportage,Mailer,by displaying an explicit subjective stance in and applying fluent fiction techniques to his writing, overturned a time-honored tradition in journalism.Mailer took a reverse approach when it came to the writing of narrative non-fiction.Instead of direct participation in his proper person, the author here is altogether absent.By means of a "free-indirect discourse," Mailer retained the raw state of both the story and the characters while still achieving an ideal literary effect, transcending both his peers and himself.
