Maggie Tulliver,the young female protagonist in George Eliot's celebrated novel The Mill on the Floss,is portrayed as "a patient,prolific,loving-hearted woman(Eliot 78)",who also shows intense interests in reading.Among all manner of people in the novel,different attitudes towards her passion for reading are displayed,with an embodiment of the local prejudice in the era and complex relationships with her.Accordingly,this essay will explain three types of attitudes to Maggie Tulliver's love of reading.
