The Implication of the Abortion of Rowing Boat Race between Peking University and Tsinghua University

北大与清华赛艇赛事夭折,根本原因在于赛事被演变成了一种功利,不再是文化体育本身,已经不是教育的一部分了。只有文化,才是长久的;唯有功利便是短暂的。学校里的体育,是文化教育的一部分,是Physical culture,而不是Sports,不应当是被分裂的两种体育。教育本是为着人的,体育应回归体育自身,使体育更像体育,人更像人。国外大学"很多好的东西不容易移植到中国来",是有土壤的问题。只是学创不了一流,根本还在于创造。独创的三个必要条件中,中国大学不缺天分和勤奋,唯独缺少自由。而自由,不是靠学的。中国大学自己要像自己,才可能独创,才可能在学别人的时候也还是自己。

The basic reason of the abortion of rowing boat race between Peking and Tsinghua University lies in that the race was evolved into a kind of utility rather than cultural physical education and a part of education. Only culture is consistent, contrary to it, the utility is sure to be short. The school physical education is a part of cultural education, it is physical culture rather than sports. It should not be seperated into two kinds of physical education. Education is for human being. And physical education should return to physical education itself. It is due to the soil issue that it is not easy to learn from many excellent experiences of foreign universities in China. It is impossible to produce the first class university only by learning, the key is to create. Among three necessary conditions for creation, Chinese universities do not lack for gift and diligence but freedom which is unable to be learned. Only when Chinese universities is to be itself, it might be ablt to create and still be itself when it learn from others.
