In Edith Wharton＇s novels,the theme of self-pursuit is presented in different ways and has profound meanings.Based on Lacan＇s ＂Theory of the Mirror Stage＂,an examination of the typical images of mirror hidden in The House of Mirth reveals Lily Bart＇s dramatic self-pursuit mirrored by the ＂other＂.In the upper class of old NY,Lily,who had primitive sense of self-awareness,experienced the loss of self,divided self,struggle and revolt,changed ＂the other＂ status at the cost of her life,thus achieving self-realization.Lily Bart＇s self-pursuit added nobility and solemnity to her tragic end,which made the protagonist a true everlasting lily.
