英国城市学院在其发展过程中呈现出"回归传统"的现象。伯顿·克拉克和张应强等学者倾向于从大学的内在逻辑解释这种现象,忽视了外在因素的作用,而大学性格概念整合了这种内在逻辑和外在的地理、政治、经济、文化等因素,具有更强的解释力。运用大学性格对"回归传统"的分析启示我们以正确的态度面对大学性格,以适当的方式改造大学性格、建构大学性格。
