对言外之力的性质有可简约论和不可简约论两种截然相对的看法。句子的言外之力与句子的意义的关系有三种可能。文章基本赞成塞尔提出的第二种看法,但提出从翻译的视角来看,有必要区分句子意义和言外之力这两个层次,这种区分对翻译活动有特殊的意义。
