The number of users and servers on Internet has increased dramatically over the past few years. People are trying various applications, among which a promising application is packet voice technology. Packet voice technology converts voice signal to digitized voice packet in certain length, then switches and transmits these packets by means of store and forward. The basic concepts of packet voice technology, including the principle, structure and performance , and some specific applications of this technology are introduced in this paper. It is stressed in this paper that packet voice technology is not only used in IP telephony to reduce the cost, combining the advantages of computer processing and Internet technologies, it is also used to realize various value-added services.
