The expansion of the Haidilao Hot-pot chain can't really be considered fast. 17 years after its establishment in 1994, they have only 60 restaurants around the country and a business volume numbering in the mere billions.The hot-pot industry isn't exactly a high-tech industry or a resource monopoly, pretty much anyone with a pot can do this in their own home.Additionally, their business model is not that unique, they just sell hot-pot, and not exactly at acheap price.As for founder Zhang Yong, he's not handsome, looking much older than his thirty some odd years.This being the case, why have we decided to make the Haidilao Hot-pot chain our cover story?Because, this is a story about 'people', and the chain's biggest innovation has been to actually treat their employees as people. Although if we look closer, the key to their success seems to not just stop there.
