泰戈尔的早期欧洲崇拜者"裹挟"了西方批评者,一战中西方帝国主义的残酷暴行又对泰戈尔的思想产生了极大的影响,使得他在西方国家演讲时,要求西方多重视东方思想。可是,当泰戈尔在中国演讲也遵循这一思路的时候,那些想要改造中国的激进派面前就出现了一些传统保守派。这就势必会导致中国激进知识分子觉得与保守主义者格格不入。

The early European admirers of Tagore ＂swept along＂ Western criticizers, while in World War I, the brutality of Western imperialism exercised a great influence on Tagore＇s ideology so that he demanded that the West should attach more importance to the Orient when he delivered speeches in the Western countries. Nevertheless, when Tagore followed the same route of thought when presenting his speeches in China, some conservative traditionalists appeared before the radicals who wanted to reform China quickly. It was inevitable that the radical Chinese intellectuals sensed a misfit between them and those conservatives.
