Newbuilding 'deluge' hits capes rates January set a high for new arrivals into an already squeezed market

A deluge of capesize newbuildings hitting the market is being blamed for depressing freight rates over the past month.Figures obtained by TradeWinds show that in one month,a staggering 42 capesizes totalling 7.5 dwt — described as a historic high — were delivered into an already overcrowded market where spot rates were hovering just above operating costs in January.Some estimates put the number of capesizes delivered in January at 27.But the actual figure was more than 50% higher.Operators expect rates in this segment to improve in the long term.
