The process of bone metabolism or bone turnover is the process of the old bone absorption by osteoclasts and new bone formation by osteoblasts. The two processes are coupled intimately in time and space and they occur in the same rebuilding unit. The quantity of bone depends on the balance of bone formation and bone absorption in the same bone reconstruction unit. Cytokines and growth factors are key mediators of bone absorption and bone formation. The determination of cytokines and growth factors has great clinical significance for the diagnosis, treatment options, and efficacy evaluation of osteoporosis. The author reviews the clinical significances of the detection of cytokines and growth factors respectively, and shares the results of recent research with colleagues in the field.
