The mesozoic strata in the Badanjilin area, Northwestern China can be divided into three subregions:Beishan subregion, Alashan subregion and Hexizoulang subregion (including the north and south provinces). They belong to the Tarim region, according to the evolution of the original Tarim plate. The Beishan subregion is intercalated between the QiemoXingxingxia fault and the Altun fault (eastward trend is DingxinEngeerwusu fault) and characterized by the Late Triassic Shanhujing Group, EarlyMiddle Jurassic Shapoquan Group and Early Cretaceous Laoshuwo Group, including the Beishan basins and Ejinaqi depression. The Alashan subregion situated on the Alashan massife, characterized by the lack of Triassic sediments, can be divided into two provinces. The north province developed volcanic rocks in the EarlyMiddle Jurassic and Early Cretaceous strata and lacked Late Jurassic sediments, strictly contrasting with the south province. Based on the Qilianshan Caledonian folding belt, the Hexizoulang subregion between the South Longshoushan fault and the North Qilianshan fault developed huge thick Mesozoic sediments. Moreover, the Altun fault may be formed during the Jurassic and strongly acted in the Early Cretaceous due to the collision of Qiangtang massife and Gangdisi plate with the original Tarim plate. Of course,the Altun fault has been strikeslipped leftward on a large scale since the Late Eocene.
