"都市佛教"是指以都市寺院为主要活动场所,根据现代都市特点及要求由僧团为主对市民进行佛法弘扬和开展宗教活动的人间佛教。"都市佛教"不同于"都市中的佛教",它是"都市中的佛教"在现代社会的进一步发展,它依"都市中的佛教"而得名,以都市为自己存续的基础空间,具有明显的现代性,有强烈的整体观念和组织观念,发展目标明确,具有广阔的视野和超前的意识。"都市佛教"是"人间佛教"的一个组成部分,抑或是大陆"人间佛教"在当代的一种具体表现,是"佛法在世间"的现实版。"都市佛教"与"山林佛教"构成了大陆"人间佛教"的全部内容。"都市佛教"概念提出已经十年,它逐渐成为学者重点关注与研究的对象,并由此取得了一系列成果。随着城镇化的普及,将会有越来越多的人加入到关注和研究"都市佛教"的队伍中来。

The so--called ＂Metropolitan Buddhism＂ means that all its activity is played in metropolitan sites and met the requirements there. It is a further development of ＂Buddhism in metropolitan＂ in modern society. It has a strong sense of wholeness and organization,with a clear target of development by a broadened view and an ahead-of-time consciousness. ＂Metropolitan Buddhism＂ is a component part of ＂Earthly Buddhism＂, and a contemporary expression of the latter in Chings mainland. ＂Metro- politan Buddhism＂ and ＂Mountainous Buddhism＂ constitute the whole content of ＂Earthly Bud- dhism＂. The proposition of ＂Metropolitan Buddhism＂ has insert an active influence in Buddhist world and the academic circle, and has gradually become the subject of many scholars in their research and has won a series of active achievements. With the development and popularization of city and town, ＂Metropolitan Buddhism＂ will play an ever greater role.
