While ＂The White Negro＂ occupies a special place in Norman Mailer’s entire writing career, the overwhelming majority of writings in China on him have only focused on his representative works or prize winners. But ＂The White Negro＂ is not only a manifesto of Mailer’s philosophy, but a well from which virtually all his literary thoughts are drawn. It is also Mailer’s most controversial piece of writing due to its endorsement of sex and violence. This essay attempts to probe into its spiritual constitution and the author’s writing motivation.
