Abe Kobo, one of the most influential Japanese post-war writers exposes the alienation of the capitalist system and the irrational and morbid social conditions for the existence of human beings in his Red Silkworm Cocoon. The major symbolic figures in the story, the "homeless I", the "lady's smiling face", the "he holding a Rod", the "red silkworm cocoon", the "he who found the Red Silkworm Cocoon and his chil- dren's toy box" symbolize the Japanese people's bewilderment to the future of Japan after the war, and the desperateness and helplessness, as well as the hypocrisy and indifference among people. All these present the unfair social system which led to inability of protecting spiritual and material life of the Japanese people.
