摘要
《米德尔马契》和《贵妇画像》这两部世界名著都是以女主人公的婚姻悲剧为主线,揭示了十九世纪西方社会的女性所面临的爱情、婚姻乃至人生困境。两位女主人公多萝西娅和伊莎贝尔都是理想主义的少女,独特的个性以及对现实认识的严重不足使她们做出了错误的婚姻选择。在婚姻悲剧中,她们都遭遇了理想的幻灭。现实的重重束缚又使她们最终的人生命运归于平庸。
George Eliot＇s Middlemarch and Henry James＇ The Portrait of a Lady,with the tragic marriage of the heroine as the main clue,reveal the predicament in love,marriage,and life that confronted women of the western society in the nineteenth century.Both Dorothey and Isabel are idealists.Their peculiar personalities and lack of knowledge of the reality lead to their wrong choices of marriage.Then their ideals are disillusioned in the tragic marriages and finally the confinements of reality result in their mediocrity in life.
