The Inevitable Choice between Domestication and Foreignization——The Analysis of Domestication and Foreignization in the Translated Versions of Hongloumeng

在评析《红楼梦》的两个著名译本(杨译本和霍译本)所用的翻译策略时,译界早有定论,即杨译本重异化的翻译策略,霍译本多用归化的翻译策略。然而,翻译策略的选择并非是主观的,而是客观的,究其原因有很多,但主要有两个:翻译中的文化因素以及翻译目的。如此一来,通过分析这两个原因,译者在翻译时就可以视情况采取合适的翻译策略。这也证明了归化与异化的翻译策略选择是必然的。

When analyzing the two famous translated versions of Hongloumeng A Dream of Red Mansions by Yang and The Story of the Stone by Hawks respectively, translation circle in China has already reached a consensus that A Dream of Red Mansions focuses more on foreignization, while The Story of the Stone almost adopts the translation strategies of domestication. However, the usage of one specific translation strategy is not subjective but objective. Its usage concerns a lot of reasons, among which cultural factors and purpose of translation are main two. In this way, translators are able to take the proper translation strategy after fully analyzing these two factors, which testifies the inevitable choice between domestication and foreignization.
