30-year-old Shostakovich lost his confidence in opera writing because his Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk was criticized by Stalin and banned for a long period after its premiere. The opera was based on a story by Leskov, describing the miserable fate of heroine Katerina Ismailova.Perhaps Shostakovich saw in this woman an indictment of the cruel reality of society. In fact, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk was an opera full of humanity.
