In Xu Dishan＇ s Chuntao, the humble and poverty-stricken heroine Chuntao leads a simple but sound spiritual life. Although the image of Chuntao gives the novel a flavor of romanticism, it actually has its roots in the real life. To depict Chuntao＇ s beauty and cleanliness is a necessary aesthetic factor of this novel, in contrast with her humble and low-status occupation. Chuntao lives in metropolitan Beijing rather than conservative countryside, which provides her a relaxed and free environment. The relationship between Chuntao and her two ＂ husbands＂ is also based on real life, bearing some similarities with certain local marriage customs. The novel reflects Xu Dishan value pursuit in literature.
