Thomas Pynchon's work is marked with a sustained attention to and sharp critique of colonialism, colonization and their impact on the modern world. The task foregrounds a global and historical vision in his depiction of European and American colonial past and its connection to the imperial present. The paper discusses the ways in which Pynchon's first novel V. traces the progress of European colonialism in its "scramble for Africa" through a panoramic view of turn-of-the-century events, and seeks linkage between the century's evils and Europe's colonial past. The paper concludes by suggesting that V. constitutes one of a series of Pynchon's novelistic attempts to dismantle the inherent logic and historical legacies of colonialism.
