The image of Demigod in Norma,or the Politicians' Love,a verse drama by H. Ibsen, deserves serious study not only because the mythical element in the image lends to the drama lively allegorical flavor, but also because the image itself is the focal point of the dramatic development. We can discern a trio of metaphors in this focal point. The first is the perplexity of love embodied in spiritual and physical temperament, followed,as the second,by religious criticism, that is,values implicated in the attitudes to gods and religion, and ended with political irony shown in various social relations and partisan conflict. The three metaphorical implications form a multi-layered conglomeration, which embodies both Ibsen's artistic creation and his dialogue with national history, leading to a combination of variety and profundity.
