中国语言从文言到白话的变革经历了从"戊戌变法"到"五四"长达二十余年的时间,《东方杂志》作为贯穿这一时段的一个具有全国影响的大刊,对中国语言的变革给予了相当的关注,不仅为讨论提供了一定的空间,见证了这一时期中国语言变革的过程,而且杜亚泉也代表《东方杂志》提出了自己的语言观和变革立场。《东方杂志》早期的语言观与"五四"主流的白话语言观是对立的,虽然坚持文言显得保守,但也有一些合理的成分,值得引起人们的注意。

It is about twenty years from Wuxu to May-fourth that the Chinese language changed the classical Chinese to colloquial Chinese,as a important force magazine of this period,the Eastern Miscellany payed more attention to the changes of language,not only offered the discussed space,witnessed the whole course of change,but also bringed forward its view and stand.The language view of the Eastern Miscellany was opposite to the view of the May-fourth,it seemed conservative,but still had any reasonable elements which we should noticed.
