To Kill a Mockingbird is the only novel of the American Southern female writer Harper Lee. Harper inherits and develops the Southern literary tradition by disclosing the typical motif-the racial relations in this novel. In addition, she is also greatly influenced by the Gothic literary traditions in view of her depiction of such impressive and representative characters as despotic father Bob Ewell, "monster" Boo Radley and the unlucky girl Mayella Ewell; her adoption of several gothic houses and night-time background; and her integration of supernatural elements into reality. Therefore, horror is produced and the gothic atmosphere is highlighted, by way of which Harper re-announces her criticism of evil in the old American South and heralds the upcoming of a new American South.
