As the first world-renowned novel of the postwar Germany,Die Blechtrommel depicts the darkest and unspeakable era in German history as witnessed by Oskar Mat Erath,a cretinism patient.Inspired by Susan Sontag＇s Illness as Metaphor,which dissects the moral burden and social injustice hidden in the symbol of illness,the novel＇s personal,historical,and political implications is to be explored from the perspective of the bitter existence of those labeled as the undesired ＂the Other＂—— individuals as patients and Jews as ＂the inferior race＂—— under Gunter Grass＇s elaborate narration and bold imagination.
