瓦尔特·惠特曼被誉为"美国19世纪最杰出的诗人","20世纪美国新诗的先驱者"和"现代诗歌的开拓者",这应该是比较公允的评论,但不够全面。传统上,学界主要关注他的诗歌成就,但他作为一个散文作家,特别是生态散文作家的成就被忽视了。1882年,惠特曼出版了日记体散文《典型的日子》,该书蕴涵了丰富的生态思想和生态文明智慧。对今天的人们来说,这种生态思想和生态文明智慧对于正确处理人与自然的关系,解决生态危机,有极大的启迪作用。

Walt Whitman is regarded as ＂the most outstanding poet in the 19th century＂,＂the forerunner of the new American poetry in the 20th century＂,and ＂the trailblazer of modern poetry＂.These laurels proffered by posterities testifying to the literary achievements of Whitman,are a relatively objective evaluation of Walt Whitman,but such an evaluation is not a comprehensive one,for the academia＇s main interest has been focusing on his poetry writing.The pity is that Whitman,as a prose writer,especially an eco-prose writer,has been overlooked with his achievements in eco-prose writing.In 1882,Whitman published his Specimen Days that expresses rich and profound eco-ideas and eco-wisdom,which are of great illumination and enlightenment to people of the present-day in properly handling the relationship between man and nature so as to solve the ecological crisis.
