This article examines the representation of deer images in the various local Yi nationality epic poetry, and points out the diversity within the Yi nationality. Although the native images and terms maybe completed to outsiders, the Yi nationality as one ethnic group has its own unique way to classify the those images. It is in this sense that the Yi nationality builds its ethnic identity in interacting with other ethnic groups. Therefore it is important to understand this process through analysis of the images of animals in the oral literature.
